Recent research at the American College of Cardiology′s Annual Scientific Session presented at the World Congress of Cardiology found that getting enough sleep can boost heart and general health, and reduce the risk of dying young.

The study included data from 172,321 people who participated in the National Health Interview Survey between 2013 and 2018, and assessed five different factors of quality sleep using a low-risk sleep score.

These factors included: seven to eight hours every night is the recommended amount of sleep; no more than twice a week, trouble going asleep; no more than twice a week, trouble staying asleep; without taking any sleeping pills; getting up at least five days a week and feeling rested.

Each element was given a score of zero or one points, with a maximum of five points signifying the best possible sleep.

The study found that those who had all five quality sleep measure (a score of five) were 30% less likely to die for any reason than those who had none or only one of the five favorable elements of low-risk sleep.

Men and women who reported having all five factors had longer life expectancies of 4.7 years and 2.4 years respectively.

The researchers hope patients and clinicians will start talking about sleep as part of their overall health assessment and disease management planning. Developing good sleep habits from a young age can benefit long-term health and prevent some premature mortality.
